Walks
in Windermere
From
the M6 motorway, onto the A591 and the first view of Lake
Windermere appears as you motor uphill before dropping
down into the ‘gateway’ to the South Lakes in Cumbria
- Windermere village.
The
trains stop and starts there, National Express buses stop there,
to pick up or drop off from all parts of the country.

Windermere is easy
to get to either by car, train, or coach.
There
is a car hire company just down the road from the station, they will happily
meet the train or coach with a car for you to hire if you wish to travel
independently around the Lake
District. Windermere
Hotel's
The
local bus terminal is also in the railway station’s forecourt and
the service is good and regular.
There
is a back-packer’s bed and breakfast establishment, plenty of other
guest houses, hotels and public houses.
A local supermarket offers a good variety of food and wine, with a very
important addition – ample car parking!
The
choice of other shops is plenty, bakeries, banks, post office, coffee
shops and gift shops all within easy reach of each other.
Lakeland
Limited is located close to the railway station, offering free parking,
a wonderful restaurant, and quality kitchen items and gifts. Plus a mail
order service.
It is an easy drive down to Lake Windermere and Bowness
Bay – or bus ride if you prefer.
Take
a trip to Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre,
on the Ambleside
Road.
Kendal is only 10 miles away to the south, again by bus, train or car,
where there is a variety of larger shops and supermarkets.
Gentle
walks from Windermere include a short climb to the viewpoint
at Orrest Head, or a stroll down towards the lake and Miller Ground.
The
main Tourist Information Centre is situated near the railway station,
where you can gather together all the facts you need to enjoy your stay
in the Lake District, including the latest weather forecast. They will
be able to advise you about fishing, horse riding, accommodation, book
your travel arrangements, tell you of any special events taking place
and generally help you to make the most of your visit to the most beautiful
spot in Britain.
