Coniston Water

Coniston Water Lake District Lakes & Waters

 

Description: The 5 mile long Coniston Water is the third largest lake in the Lake District. The lake is situated at the foot of Coniston Old Man in the centre of the Lake District National Park. Boat trips on the famous 1859 steamboat, Gondola, are a popular way to experience the lake’s beauty and surrounding landscape.

Donald Campbell broke the water speed record on Coniston Water in 1955, and was killed attempting to regain it again in 1967. There is a memorial to him on the village green, just opposite the car park, and information about him in the Ruskin Museum.

8 March 2001, Bluebird was raised from the depths of Coniston Water, then on the 28 May the remains of Campbell's body were brought to the surface. Coniston church held memorial service on the 12 September 2001, Donald Campbell was buried in the churchyard.
