The Lake District: Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Grasmere, Coniston & Keswick

Visitors to Windermere arrive either by car, train or coach. The two towns run into each other and are mainly tourist orientated. Bowness has a long Lakeside area with a bay full of steamers, which depart all day to Ambleside at the north end of Windermere Lake or Lakeside at the south end of the Lake. You can hire rowing boats at Bowness Bay at an hourly rate and take a relaxing sail on Lake Windermere. Bus services between Windermere and Bowness run every 20 minutes from Bowness Bay to Windermere station.

Windermere and Bowness are looked upon as the main towns within the Lake District National Park which forms a large part of Cumbria, stretching from just north of Lancaster to Carlisle near the Scottish border. People from all over the world come to Cumbria on walking holidays or to see the world famous tourist attractions and Lake Windermere, which is England's largest lake and measures 10 miles in length. Bowness Bay is approximately half way up the Lake between Lakeside and Ambleside.
